About the Role
We are seeking a California-based Building Plan Review Consultant with deep knowledge of structural codes and construction regulations. This consultant will conduct pre-submission plan reviews of architectural and structural plans to ensure compliance with California Building Code and identify any issues that could delay city approvals.
This is a project-based consulting role. The candidate must currently be employed by or have experience working within a city department as a building official, plan checker, or inspector.
Key Responsibilities
Review architectural and structural drawings prior to city submission to ensure code compliance
Identify potential red flags or inconsistencies related to structural integrity, building codes, and permit requirements
Provide written feedback to design teams to support code-adherent revisions
Ensure alignment with California Building Standards, Title 24, and local jurisdictional requirements
Support project teams in streamlining the city approval and permitting process
Communicate technical findings in a clear, actionable manner
Provide consultation on an as-needed, per-project basis
What We’re Looking For
Licensed Engineer (PE or SE) in California
Currently employed by or with prior experience as a city plan checker or building official in California
Strong expertise in California Building Code, structural assessments, and permitting requirements
Familiarity with residential and commercial building types
Excellent attention to detail and code interpretation
Clear communication and documentation skills
Based in California and actively involved in code enforcement or public agency work
